Community Spotlight: Do you think social networking is changing the world? If so, how?

Dear Members,

Welcome to our community spotlight feature*.  This week we chose canadachick’s topic asking “Do you think social networking is changing the world, if so how?”

Just yesterday, CNN interviewed Mark Zuckerberg (co-founder of Facebook) about his plan to get over 5 billion people worldwide on Facebook, essentially coming close to “taking over the world.”

Social media has become such a huge part of our world; it affects the way we communicate, the way we do business, and the way we share information with our friends. Here are some of the very thought-provoking responses from some of the respondents to this topic:

Kimwalsh06 : I think social networking has made it easier for people without transportation or with physical disabilities to communicate with others. I think social networking gives us a new way to meet new people and too communicate long distant without the extra charges with friends and family

rainbow_bella422 : i think social networking is ok as long as you use it right,,,its true that lots of people do spend all there time on these sites and although it may be slightly useless at times but it does connect everyone in a way that was never thought possible to our grandparents and great-grandparents. i think the right way to use it is to just live your life to the fullest and let everyone in on your new memories while reading up on others new memories. if you wanted you could kinda consider this site a social network because it is bringing us all together to share our opinions while reading others.

Dominie : What is a “real life” – is it in understanding others and growing complexly? If so I think social networking gives us the perfect opportunity to live amazing lives. I can share everything I’m passionate about on Facebook and have people see that and click what they are interested in, I could never in a million years have the same impact with my beliefs if I didn’t have the internet to help me with that. I can also look at everything my friends are passionate about and understand them and the issues they bring forth. I can educate myself on how different people are just people… if I was stuck with face to face interaction only I’d be pretty bummed out cause I have friends from all over the world and we’ll all continue travelling and being in different spaces. My friend in Japan? Just a click away and we can talk. It’s great to be able to speak across borders and cultures

Rambobunny : I think there are good and bad aspects about social networking. For one, people spend way too much time on social networks these days. It gets to the point were some people, people I know, are willing to wake up in the middle of the night to comment on a post that they got tagged in. There are better things to do than staying up to date with facebook or twitter. However, this being said, I do believe that social networking has reconnected the world in a way that wasn’t possible before its uprising. So, it’s not a bad thing, only if your life isn’t consumed by it.
